Augustus J. McDonough

Co. B, 1st Bn, 506th Infantry

101st Airborne Division

Awarded: Silver Star

For gallantry in action in the Republic of Vietnam on 6 July 1970.
Specialist McDonough distinguished himself while serving as a rifleman
in Company B, 1st Battalion (Airmobile), 506th Infantry, defending a night defensive perimeter near Fire Support Base Maureen, Republic of Vietnam. When the enemy launched a determined offensive, several friendly positions around the perimeter were neutralized. Specialist McDonough, despite intense hostile fire, maneuvered to administer emergency medical treatment to his wounded comrades. He simultaneously engaged the enemy with suppressive fire and dragged the wounded to safety. Then, moving to a weakened sector
of the perimeter, he effectively engaged an aggressor who was assaulting the command post. Though painfully wounded, Specialist McDonough continued his effective suppressive fire until the enemy force had been repelled. Specialist McDonough’s personal bravery and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.

Also awarded: Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Air Medal, Army Commendation Medal
