News: Eugene Joseph "Gene" Rockacy

Eugene Joseph "Gene" Rockacy, 98, of Peters Township, died peacefully Friday, December 19, 2014, in Donnell House, Washington. He was the beloved husband of 68 years to Rose Rockacy; loving father of Carol (Kenneth) Baits and Pam Rockacy (Chris Annas); and proud grandfather of Greg Smith and Jessica Haley Annas. Many nieces and nephews also survive. Mr. Rockacy was raised in Castle Shannon, one of nine children. He was a proud World War II veteran, serving in the Pacific Theater as a member of the U.S. Navy Seabees 8th Battalion. Mr. Rockacy was a charter member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 764, McMurray, where he served in the honor guard. He also enjoyed giving first-person interviews at Peters Township schools. He was a charter member of St. Benedict the Abbot Church, McMurray, and Ben's Men. Mr. Rockacy worked as a foreman for 40 years at Allis Chalmers, later working at Vernridge School in Keystone Oaks School District, where he was known as Mr. Gene. An avid soccer player, he played in the 1946 National Amateur Open Championship game with the Castle Shannon team. He was an avid golfer, hunter and gardener, who was famous for his Christmas tree pepper plants. Friends and family are welcome from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday in Beinhauer Funeral Home, 2828 Washington Road, McMurray, 724-941-3211. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Monday, December 22, in St. Benedict the Abbot Church, McMurray. Interment will be in Jefferson Memorial Park, Pleasant Hills.
