News: VFW Memorial Park Post 764 honors SILVER STAR Recipient
06/13/2014 - by Bob Donnan - Chairman of the Wall of Valor
Neil Brown was inducted onto the Post 764 Wall of Valor during a 30-minute ceremony Sunday, June 8th at 1:15pm. Neil was joined by family, friends and fellow Wall of Valor inductees, becoming the 30th man honored on the Wall of Valor over the past 20 years. Neil Brown joins 9 other recipients of the Silver Star award, 19 men who were awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, and his good friend Dan O’Neill who was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross.
Nearly 45 years ago, 1st Lieutenant Neil H. Brown crossed paths with his friend 1st Lieutenant Dan O’Neill in the midst of battle in the A Shau Valley, Republic of Vietnam. By coincidence, O’Neill jumped into a fox hole already occupied by Brown, with Dan’s steel pot knocking his glasses loose and nearly breaking his nose. The two men were 101st Airborne ‘Screaming Eagle’ brothers in arms, having flown to Vietnam on the same plane, and later travelling home together following their tours of duty. Neil Brown’s complete SILVER STAR citation appears at the end of this story.
I want to thank everyone involved in the extensive preparation, the induction ceremony and luncheon: Commander Scotty Huenefeld and the Post 764 officers; the rest of the Wall of Valor committee – Joe Malek, James Morin and Dan O’Neill; the Honor Guard led by Shannon Crowley – Dominic DeFranco, Mike Klauer, Joe Malek and Dennis Riznow; the Ladies Auxiliary volunteers led by Mary Ellen Brosick – Sarah Burgan, Diane Keremes, Marge Klauer, Sandy Roberto, Randy Toomey; and Chef Peter Locante and his kitchen and hospitality staff – Karen Fincham, Kelli Arison, Diana Curley, Rob Bails; and Cindy Miller and Jane DeBlasio for the dining room set-up and decorating.
Our next Wall of Valor induction ceremony is set for Sunday July 27th at 1:00pm when we will honor Private First Class Pasquale Papalia for his gallantry in action on 28 February 1967 and award of the Silver Star while serving as a rifleman with Company C, 4th Battalion, 31st Infantry in the Republic of Vietnam.
